What to do when you get laid off

unemploymentAlright, you just got laid off..I know it hurts (I have been there) but it is not the end of the world.  Here are 5 basic things to do when you get laid off.

Take some time to relax- Chances are you have been working like crazy, take this time to slow things down and take sometime for yourself.  Go to the movies, go golfing, do something to take your mind off of things.  I recommend taking 2-3 days of “down time” then it is back to work on your new job, which is finding a new job.

Get active- Your 3 days of relaxation are over, you need to move forward and do so with energy and enthusiasm.  Start your day by excercising, going for a walk, meditating.  It is important that you focus and stay postive during this transitional perid.

Let People know- I know this is difficult as our human nature is to close up and keep this to ourselves.  You have to realize that getting layed off is not your fault and it happens frequently to a lot of people.  Make some calls, send out some emails, get your network going.

File for unemployment-  You are going to need money and getting unemployment will help bridge the gap.  Again, you have nothing to be embarrassed about.  You have been paying  into unemployment since you started working, now is your chance to get some of your money back.

Update your resume-  You can’t look for a new job with an old resume.  Instead of just adding some bullets and a new job title, you should take this time and make sure your resume is outstanding.  There are many resume writing companies that will give you free critiques.  In fact, I would be willing to critique your resume for free, just email me at admin@careercopilot.com or post your resume below.  If you need to have your resume professionally done, I say go for it.  The ROI will be worth it in the end.
