Obama will take office in a little over a week, and he recently upped his job growth numbers from 2.5 million to 3 million (that’s a lot of jobs!) What are you doing today to take advantage of this. Here are some tips that could help move you in the right direction.
1. Build you network. There are two ways to approach this, first in the traditional sense of who you know and who they know, etc. I want to focus on building your social networks. If you are not on Linkedin, build your profile right now. This is the most important social networking site for business people. Recruiters troll the profiles everyday looking for candidates for their openings, and there are a ton of networking groups to join as well. I am a member of over a dozen groups (Villanova alumni, Delta Kappa Epsilon alumni, B2Breps, Networked Recruiter…(you get the idea))
I also recommend setting up a Facebook account and i also like Plaxo.
2.Learn new skills. If you are out of work right now, the best thing you can do is learn a new skill, take some classes, learn a new software language. This will help position you at the top when the new jobs start flowing.
3. Dust of your resume. This is the perfect time to update your resume. There are a couple of firms that will provide you with a free resume critique, this is a great way to see how your resume stacks up. If you need professional help, get it. The 200-300 hundred bucks will be well worth it in the end. In my opinion, a professionally written resume has a huge ROI.
